That is not the case with image backups.Ĭome to think of it, the fact that you're asking how to restore from a clone actually suggests that you'd be better off dispensing with clones entirely and switching to image backups.

Clone targets are put at risk every time you perform a new clone operation, because you have to destroy your existing 'backup' to start the clone operation and you don't get a new good 'backup' again until the clone operation actually completes. This is partly why clones should not be considered 'backups'. The reason is that if your source drive ever develops an issue that causes a clone operation to fail partway through (or the source drive just happens to completely die in the middle of a clone operation), then at that point your have a damaged/dead source and your destination is no longer any good either because the clone operation didn't complete. Happy to help! However, you may want to consider performing image backups somewhere even if you're regularly cloning your drive. In the interest of being prepared, you might find it useful/reassuring to boot your system from Rescue Media and then step through the entire wizard right up to the point of seeing the activity summary (but without actually clicking Finish to start the job) just to make sure you know how to do everything if you ever need to. If you're instead capturing image backups, the process for restoring an image backup is similar and documented on this page of the manual. Depending on the sizes of the disk(s) involved, you may want or need to specify custom partition sizing for the clone job.

If you are in fact cloning, then if your hard drive dies, you'd boot your system from your Macrium Reflect Rescue Media that you'd have on a CD/DVD or USB flash drive (test boot it before disaster strikes!) and then just run a clone job choosing your external drive as the source and your new internal drive as the target. Are you actually performing a clone to that external hard drive, or are you performing image backups? Sorry if that sounds like an unnecessary question, but several people say they're 'cloning' they're hard drive when they mean they're performing capturing images of it.
